ASG - Win Us Over

One of the first things I posted on this blog was a split between Black Tusk and ASG. This is ASG's most recent record, released early 2008. If you like Torche, The Sword, Queens of The Stone Age, CKY.... check these dudes out. Very unique, pretty heavy, yet still quite accessible for those not into the really heavy stuff. If there is any band I don't want you to over look on this blog, it's these dudes. Do yourself a favor and get this record, and if you get a chance to see them live, you don't wanna miss it. These guys bring the rock n roll joy ride to the max.

Year of No Light - Nord

Truly beautiful, genre-transcending music from France. It'd be unfair to call them a metal band, because many of their songs aren't metal at all. It'd be unfair to say they aren't heavy, because some of the jams are heavy as God's balls. These guys refuse to be pigeon-holed and it'd be a disservice to their art to continue blathering half accurate statements about their music. If you're into heavy music, you'll dig the shit outta this band. If you AREN'T into heavy music, I seriously suggest you give this record a few listens, as it might just be the perfect gateway to expanding your horizons. Just get it, and turn it up.

Damn the French and their amazing music!!! <~~~~ clicky

Common Rider - This is Unity Music

So, who remembers Operation Ivy?! Great jams, right? Right. Well, some of you may know that when Operation Ivy disbanded, guitarist Tim Armstrong and bassist Matt Freeman went on to form Rancid. Rancid got their well-deserved time in the sun, playing Warped Tours and what nots. However, Operation Ivy's singer, Jesse Michaels, also started a band after Op Ivy, called Common Rider. Unfortunately, they never saw the same success as Rancid, despite being totally jam-tacular. The music is a really neat Ragga-punk, half ska-half rock mixture. And as the album's title suggests, it is definitely Unity music. Common Rider not only mix several styles in a unity of rock-jam, the lyrics are usually about coming together as humans and righting our various wrongs, as well as other social and political issues. Don't know what else or how else to describe it, but if you like punk, ska, reggae, or just good jams, check this record. Here's a sample for you lazy fucks. (In fact, 2 samples because I couldn't decide....) Link to download is below the vids.

Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot

Another one for Wong. Sparklehorse was mainly a guy named Mark Linkous. This 1995 record was his debut as Sparklehorse and paved way for his ever changing style to start permeating the indie scene. The music is kinda all over the place; a strangely appealing mix of dream-pop, alt-country and soundscape. Constantly overdosing on one substance or another, this dude was a master of taking drugs to make music to take drugs to. If that's not reason enough to get this record, then I don't know what to tell ya!

Click link, smoke bowl, then listen.

Keepaway - Baby Style EP

Here's one for my buddy Jon Scott. Keepaway gets a lot of comparisons to Animal Collective, which I can totally see; however, these guys seem a lot more palatable for a newcomer to the psych-folk party. Despite being slightly more accessible, Keepaway deserves a spot in the indie sun, and I'm glad Jon Scott told me about these dudes. So if you like Animal Collective, get this record. If you've never heard of Animal Collective, and have no idea what psych-folk means... get with the program, and then download this record. Hope you dig.

CAN YOU DIG IT?

Townes Van Zandt - Live At The Old Quarter, Houston, TX

By request from my nigga The Wong, here is Townes Van Zandt - Live At The Old Quarter. Most people may only know him from his cover of Rolling Stones' 'Dead Flowers', which was featured in The Big Lebowski. If you aren't aware though, Townes Van Zandt was a Texan singer-songwriter who wrote songs about everything from love and love lost, to gettin' drunk and shooting drugs. This one's a 2 parter so make sure you get 'em both!
